week 3

During the third week of this class we began leaning about conjunction. disjunction, negations and implifications. I am beginning to get even more interested in the relation between mathematical expressions and sentence expressions in english (perhaps because my other major is linguistics). I really enjoy translating between the two and think it  will become a good strength of mine in this class. Also this week we did a paper folding problem which i thought was pretty interesting. I enjoyed how concepts being learned in class were connected with a more visual way of thinking. This aided me a lot in understanding the concepts this week.
Another thing that really helps me are the venn diagrams. I think they actually aid with my understanding of the material and when I can really get a good grasp on if I am understanding the material when venn diagrams are used.
Overall I think I am on track with the course but it is clear I do need to study the concepts on my own free time a bit more. Connecting the ideas to visual and lingustic ideas do help me a lot and I think they would prove to be even more helpful if I try to incorporate these ways of studying into my weekly routine.

after week two of csc165

Hello!! This is my first slog for csc 165. So far this course is not really what I expected. Being that the name of the course is Mathematical Expression and Reasoning for computer science, I had expected the course to focus more on math skills like calculus but the course seems to be more about expression and effectively communicating information.
So far we've covered topics such as universal and existential quantification and have learned how to use venn diagrams to visualize these problems. We've also covered implications  and have compared them with everyday language which I found very interesting. In lecture, we did an activity where we determined which segment of sentences was the assumption and which was the conclusion based on P=>Q ("P implies Q"). This I found to be very helpful in understanding since we incorporated ways of communication that I'm used to, like talking, with more mathematical ways of communication, which made the concepts easier to understand.
Overall the course is not really what I expected but I think with effort I will be able to do okay. The material is explained in a way that I understand, which helps a lot. I'm looking forward to learn more in this course next week :)
